Europe Group Considers Technical Network to Monitor Insect Biodiversity

By Conny Graumans, Director of the Europe Steering Committee

AgGateway’s Europe Steering Committee is exploring the idea of supporting development of a technical network to automatically measure and monitor the level of insect biodiversity in fields. The idea comes from Kiran Joseph, Digital Product Manager with the Syngenta Group.

The objective would be:

  • A low-cost, low maintenance, easy-to-implement sensor network that can quantify and qualify occurrence and activity of flying insects.
  • An open API/integration data stream on insect activity from these sensors to ingest data to all/any existing biodiversity platforms.
  • A simple interface that can share the open data stream API info, the DIY kit for hardware and basic spatial mapping of species/sensor activity.
  • A common standard and protocol to automate data collection, processing and reporting of biodiversity through machines/IoT devices irrespective of the make and manufacturer.

Once we have a narrative of the use case, we will work with the Portfolio Management Center to pursue a project charter for a working group. If you have interest in this project, please contact me via Member Services at Member.Services@AgGateway.org
