Ag Retailers’ Powerful Testimony: Switching from Paper to Electronic Boosts Efficiency and Quickly Pays Off

By Susan Ruland, AgGateway Communications Director

Agricultural retailers and manufacturers offered powerful testimonials at the Mid-Year Meeting on how moving from paper-based tracking systems into electronic connectivity – through standardized transactions, barcoding and other systems – has dramatically improved their efficiency, accuracy and customer service; and they called on others to embrace eConnectivity to better streamlinethe supply chain. Moreover, they said their investments in electronic data transfer quickly paid off, saving their companies time and money, and boosting customer service.

“We have seen a return-on-investment as high as 50 to 1 annually, just due to reducing shrink,” said Randy Fry, Data Process and Information Systems Manager at Ceres Solutions, an Indiana ag retail supply cooperative. “It only takes about 10 to 12 bags of seed corn lost in a year to pay for the technology.”  > Read more...

Mid-Year Meeting

Thanks for a Great Mid-Year Meeting!

By Kristin Nottingham, Software Solutions Integrated, LLC

The 2017 Mid-Year Meeting was a success with a total of 167 attendees, three days of valuable content, including the Ag Retail Connectivity Seminar, and great participation from all the attendees. The meeting kicked off with a fireside chat from Matt Carstens, Director of SUSTAIN for WinField, and Teddy Bekele, CIO of Land O’Lakes, discussing big data and the focus on sustainability. The opening session related well to what is happening in the agriculture industry and was well-received by those in attendance.

Networking was an important part of the meeting for attendees from almost 50 different companies. With a networking lunch, two evening receptions, and multiple refreshment breaks, there was adequate time for what some consider the most important reason to attend the conference. > Read more...

Furthering eConnectivity

AgGateway Mission in Motion

By Josh Wall, AgGateway

The Mid-Year Meeting was a good chance to catch up with people I have not seen for several months and discuss trending topics within the agriculture industry. The week was very productive and filled with insightful sessions and work that furthered AgGateway’s mission, “To promote, enable and expand eBusiness in agriculture.”

There were three instances that stood out to me that truly encapsulated the spirit of AgGateway. The first occurred in the opening session during the fireside chat between Matt Carstens, Director of SUSTAIN for WinField, and Teddy Bekele, CIO of Land O’Lakes. They had a candid discussion regarding the explosion of data that is available to growers and the industry and the ways in which that data can be converted into useful, actionable information for business value. The “gotcha” moment for me was when they reminded the audience that the agriculture industry needs to do our part in sculpting and forming consumers’ image of agriculture practices and products, not leaving it up to chance, so the right message will be conveyed. One of the major methods of creating that message to consumers is through data, and to have good data, you need standards. This is one big reason why the work we do at AgGateway is so critical. > Read more...

5-Year Evolution from Cost Center to Growth Area

By Jody Costa, Barcoding, Inc. and Allied Providers Council Chair

The following article is taken from the whitepaper, “From Cost Center to Growth Center: Warehousing in 2018.”

As customer satisfaction and supply chain efficiency become more important drivers of warehousing operations, the industry is re-examining its perceptions of the business. Fewer organizations continue to view warehouses and distribution centers simply as commoditized links between endpoints of the supply chain. Senior business executives across all market segments can no longer afford to simplistically look at warehouses as necessary evils that are fundamentally cost centers.

The movement from linear to complex, multi-node supply chains recognizes this shift in perception, and is being driven by greater volatility, constrained capacity, evolving regulations, major shifts in customer demographics and buying patterns, and increasingly demanding customer and supplier requirements. Overall, the warehouse survey points to more industry professionals seeing the bigger picture and viewing warehouses and distribution facilities as historically underleveraged centers that can drive competitive differentiation and, by doing so, increase profitable growth. > Read more...
